Most of us like to think we’re optimistic and positive. No one wants to be considered any less. In fact, even as children we’re taught to smile and think the best of the people around us, isn’t it? In truth, that may be far from reality. Although we might mean to be positive, those negative thoughts have a way of creeping in, especially if we’re tired or anxious. Our emotions can derail us, just as much as the negative influences around us. We’re constantly being broadsided by negativity, and we can’t help but respond in kind.

Now, how do we recognize when our self-talk is turning negative and stop it before it gains a foothold in our lives? We start by identifying the most common culprits.

Do you think in Black and White?
The minute we start using ‘all’ or ‘nothing’ statements you’re falling into a negativity mindset. When this happens, the best thing to do is to remind yourself the world doesn’t really work that way. In fact, there are more shades of grey than you might think. Follow us for more.

Do you have Tunnel Vision?
When you can only see the bad in everything you have tunnel vision. At time like these you may feel lost in a sea of despair and negative self-talk. From this lens you see the world as only negative and seek out proof by pointing out every flaw or failure. This can be defeated by rewording or reframing your statements as they come up. Look for the positive spin you can put on things.

Do you always have The Disaster Plan?
When you can only see the negative outcome in everything, accept that sometimes, failure happens. You may even use dire predictions to work out a ‘plan B’ in case you need one, but it is important to remember to remind yourself there’s also a chance of success in what you try. There’s no reason to assume the worst. Follow us for more.

Are you an expert at Anticipation?
Do you presume you know what the other person is thinking, and it’s never good, right? To combat that you can try having an honest conversation with the person instead. Let them speak for themselves. Hear them out completely. They might even surprise you. Assuming the worst about everything is not a very helpful strategy if you are working on getting out of the habit of negative self talk.

Do you have a Guilty Conscience?
You may have done something you are not very proud of and that is eating you and manifesting in negative self talk. In our weakest moments we can mess up, and its okay to mess up, we are humans after all. But when we do, its important to acknowledge we messed up and apologize immediately without allowing it to fester. After apologizing let it go. You messed up Once and you have apologized, there’s no reason to hold on to it. For some people, their brains are expert at bringing up the past, regardless of how much time has passed or what you’ve done to make amends. If that is the case, with you remind yourself of the lessons you’ve learned. Look forward, see the possibilities in the future and Let go of the rest.

When you let go of negative self-talk, you’re giving yourself the ability to try out a new frame of mind so Embrace positivity. Discover what the world has to offer!
